Conversion to a mobile home

A few years ago, my wife Sonja and I started looking for a suitable mobile home for future trips and photo projects. Requirements were:

  • Easy maintainability
  • Robust and durable
  • Suitable for off-road use
  • Compact
  • Little complexity/ few electronics
  • Suitable for containers
  • Weight <= 3.5 tons

After extensive research, we chose a Toyota Landcruiser. A number of discussions with long-term travelers and off-roaders, especially at the 4-wheel drive trade fair in Bad Kissingen, helped us during the selection process. The campsite at the edge of the fair is exactly the right place to interact with people with similar interests.

After buying a pickup in 2015, the next phase began. A cabin was installed on the vehicle by an experienced professional metalworker who specializes in these vehicles (Custom Campers).

We then needed about two years for the subsequent interior work. As an IT project manager, planning was easy. For the furniture construction and the instalment of electronics, gas and water, however, a certain amount of know-how had to be acquired before work could begin. Custom Campers was available to answer any questions we had.

Here are some pictures of how our "Kuddel" came about:
